That is some magical level of stupid right there and I can’t believe this song happened, then just to add insult to injury not only is this song the second track on the album but it’s also the final track. I’m presuming that his girlfriend did not see the funny side of him getting arrested for starting bar fights which is why suddenly the song turns on the girlfriend as if the guy was in the right. Then towards the end of the song the narrator of the song just goes completely mental and decided to throw his girlfriend out of his like telling her to get out of his house. The song Uh Oh is about calling your girlfriend to tell her you’ve been arrested for being a dick at a bar then acting proud about doing it.

This song comes off like a creepy ex who doesn’t know how to hear the word “no” or understand the phrase “go away”. Although there’s a part near the end of the album where he repeats “Why you gotta bring me down?” so great just trying to convince her to get back with you. There’s another relationship centred song on this album called Just Tell Me which is about how the narrator of the song has made some sort of mistake of the girl he was with has seemingly left him and he’s asking what he needs to do. Like the lyrics are just all about how the singers knows this girl better than she knows herself and he can see she needs help she just won’t ask for it and he’s going to give her all the love she needs and I swear I think I’m going to puke if I have to talk about this song anymore. This song just sounds so condescending and thanks to Scantlin’s nasally singing the song sounds sarcastic. We get some boring ballads like the track My Kind Of Crazy which is about how there’s a girl who’s a little bit out their but the narrator of the track is always going to be there and make things better and I don’t know if it’s me but I can’t stand these type of songs. I mean that Nickelback song is hardly original and it’s not exactly the greatest song ever either but at least Nickelback felt like they had an actual point they wanted to make with the song whereas this Puddle Of Mudd song feels like such a rehash of someone else’s song.Įven outside of all the songs trying to be deep the songs aren’t much better.

Literally all they did was change the word “today” with “tomorrow”. I mean the first line is “If tomorrow was your last day”. Slide Away is another song that tries to have a meaning and is trying to be deep and existential however the most notable thing about it is it steals the premise of the song If Today Was Your Last Day by Nickelback.

Yet it’s one of the simplest songs on the album as the song is just a series of throwaway lines that don’t really have any sort of structure. This song is about self destructive behaviour and if you know anything about Wes Scantlin this is certainly something he should know about. Kiss It All Away is probably the biggest offender in this category as it actually has a more specific topic and yet doesn’t do much with it. However considering the experience of the band members, particularly Scantlin as he’s the only original member and I assume also has the most experience in music, I expect a lot more. Diseased Almost is another song that has this problem and trying to be deep and meaningful but just comes off as though it was written by a band that literally only formed recently and if that was the case I’d probably be less harsh on it. This is a problem that plagues the album throughout as despite frontman Wes Scantlin being in the band since 1991 this album just feels like he’s learned nothing and not grown at all as a musician. It feels like it was written by an angsty teenager not a group of men in their late 40s. Broadly it’s about feeling like you’re falling down and how no one understands you and how you have no idea how it feels to feel low. Then we get to the lyrics which are some of the most generic and boring lyrics ever.

So when I first started playing the album and I heard a pretty decent guitar riff from the opening track You Don’t Know I was thinking “huh this isn’t too bad”. But hey I’m always one to give bands and artists a chance so who knows maybe this might be good? They have one song I like which is their big hit Blurry from their 2001 album Come Clean. Aside from that I find most of their music kind of bland and forgettable from what little I’ve heard. I know this band has fans but personally I’ve never been able to get into them. Seriously who was begging for new music from Puddle Of Mudd? Anyone? I know I wasn’t because this isn’t the early 2000’s. So I had no plan to talk about this album but after hearing it I just had too…
